Watertown Firefighters Douse Small Fire on Elton Avenue

Fire appeared to start with an air conditioner.

A small house fire that started with an air conditioning unit was doused by Watertown firefighters Tuesday morning.

Residents of 31 Elton Ave. called the Fire Department at 6:56 a.m. when smoke detectors sounded and smoke filled the basement, said Watertown Deputy Fire Chief Tom McManus.

“All the occupants were already out of the building [when fire crews arrived], and crews found fire showing on the (right) side of the building,” McManus said.

The flames appeared to be coming from the air conditioner disconnect – where the unit plugs in, McManus said. The fire was put out and electricity was turned off. Firefighters also checked to see if the fire had spread in the basement or first floor, but it had not.
