Watertown Police Log: June 13 to June 19

Two men tried to steal a cart load of items from Home Depot and iPods stolen from students.

Arrests

June 13, 10:24 p.m.: An officer patrolling on Main Street spotted a red 1962 Ford Falcon driving down the street at about 50 miles per hour, Police Lt. Michael Lawn said. When the driver saw the cruiser he jammed on the brakes and turned quickly onto Pilgrim Street and then onto Acton Street before parking in a lot on Howard Street. The officer caught up with the man, and discovered he had a suspended license. Brian W. Gould, 26, of 44 Phillips St. Apt. 1 in Watertown, was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license, speeding, improper operation of a motor vehicle and two warrants for driving with a suspended license – one from Waltham District Court and one from Dedham District Court.

June 17, 5:11 p.m.: Police arrested two men for shoplifting when they attempted to take two carts filled with items from Home Depot but paying for only one, Lawn said. The two men allegedly filled the carts with identical items, except one man put a power sprayer into his cart. One man paid for his items then handed the receipt to the other man who attempted to leave without paying. Store security saw them, and tried to stop them, but they ran and left in a blue pickup truck. Police stopped them at a red light on Arsenal Street. Frank J. Alfred, 48, of 244 Blue Hills Avenue Apt. 3 in Roxbury, and Michael A. Mitchell, 44, of 16 Drayton Avenue in Dorchester, were both arrested on a charge of larceny of merchandise worth more than $250.

June 18, 5:48 p.m.: An officer on patrol pulled over a 1996 Ford Explorer and discovered the driver had a suspended license, Lawn said. Rodney J. Ashby, 34, of 626 Walkhill St. in Mattapan, was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, a subsequent offense.

June 19, 6:46 p.m.: An officer patrolling on Nichols Avenue spotted a Mitsubishi SUV driving with a left brake light out, and when he ran the registration he found the driver had a suspended license, Lawn said. Fabrico Q. Reis, 23, of 18 Lexington Terrace Apt. 18A in Waltham, was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license and an equipment violation.

Incidents

June 13, 5:35 a.m.: The owner of a 2009 Honda Accord parked his car overnight on Bromfield Street and found that someone had broken in and taken his GPS device, Lawn said. The car had been left unlocked.

June 13, 4:52 p.m.: A Garmin GPS device was taken from a 2004 Buick that was parked on Main Street, Lawn said. The car had been left unlocked.

June 14, 10:55 a.m.: The manager of Vitamin World in the Arsenal Mall discovered that someone had taken the petty cash from the two registers in the store sometime overnight, Lawn said. There were no signs of forced entry.

June 14, 9:19 p.m.: The owner of a 1999 Honda Civic parked the car at the Arsenal Mall and when he returned to the car he found that his North Face backpack, containing three school books, was missing, Lawn said.

June 15, 7:10 a.m.: A custodian at the Lowell School discovered shattered glass on the ground and found a window above a rear door had been broken, likely by a BB or a rock, Lawn said.

June 15, 2:13 p.m.: A sophomore at Watertown High School told the School Resource Officer that she brought her iPod Touch to school the previous day and someone took it out of her backpack, Lawn said.

June 15, 4:22 p.m.: A boy and his mother came to the Police Station to report that his iPod Touch was taken from a bench at the Boys & Girls Club when while he was playing basketball, Lawn said.

June 17, 8:22 a.m.: Someone entered an unlocked car on Center Street and stole $5 in change, Lawn said.

June 18, 2:08 p.m.: The driver of a 2011 Honda Accord parked while he went to shop at Stop & Shop on Watertown Street and when he returned his GPS device, a briefcase and three bottles of prescription medicine had been stolen, Lawn said.

June 19, 11:47 a.m.: The owner of Super Fusion Cuisine II on Mt. Auburn Street found that someone had tried to get into the rear door of the restaurant, Lawn said. The wooden door had pry marks on it and the deadlock was damaged.

June 19, 2:12 p.m.: A man tried to leave Home Depot without paying for a copper elbow pipe, but security stopped him, Lawn said. The 39-year old Waltham man will be summonsed to Waltham District Court for shoplifting.
