Watertown Reds Baseball Team drops game to Testa Corp. Bombers

The Testa Corp Bombers beat the Watertown in an Intercity League baseball game Tuesday night at Bentley University.

The Watertown Reds dropped their Intercity League Baseball game 3-1 to the Testa Corp. Bombers on a perfect night for baseball Tuesday at Bentley University. However, anyone attending the game got to see baseball in it's most pure form, something that is often lacking with the pro game today.

If you haven't heard of the Intercity Baseball League, you should start to check it out.

Some of the best amateur baseball players ranging from college, to just out of college, to former and current major league prospects that have played in the minors  participate from all over Massachusetts. They are playing in a league that has been around since 1950, and Watertown is lucky enough to have one of those teams.

The League consists of nine teams that begin play in early June and go all the way through mid August, playing a 32 game season.

That long of a season is one reason why Watertown's manager Joe Chiodo wasn't too worried about his team's early season let down.

"It's early," he said. "We still have plenty of times to get things rolling here, we had some good pitching today, we just need our bats to start coming around. We'll be alright."

That good pitching for the Reds came from the arm of Brain Casey, who gave up 11 hits, but they were scattered throughout much of the game. He also held the Bombers to just one run over the first five innings.

For the Bombers, who hail from East Boston but play their home games in Malden, Glen Misho was outstanding on the mound, shutting down the Reds lineup and giving up just the one run on three hits.

Bombers coach Paul Bonfiglio was pleased with his team's effort overall, also noting how early in the season it is.

"For a team that just started playing games a week or so ago, I thought we were good,"  he said. "Glen pitched really well, got his off speed stuff working and really attacked the hitters, I thought that was big for him. Hitting wise we just came up with some timely hits when we needed them ... always a good thing."

Watertown got on the board early in the bottom of the first when Jim McLaughlin knocked in Sal Mendonca with a single to center after Mendonca had singled and advanced to second on a passed ball.

Testa Corp. answered right back in the top of the second when Anthony DelPrete drove in Bob Pease with a single to left after Pease had singled and reached second on a stolen base.

Each team traded quick innings, despite a few hits an inning scattered in for the Bombers with no runs to show for it, until the top of the sixth.

Testa took the lead for good when Mike Addesa, Devin Perry, Kevin Magoon and Dan Gad all ripped singles to each part of the ball park scoring two runs in the frame and giving the Bombers the 3-1 lead.

The Reds went quietly in the bottom half of the inning and couldn't come up with a rally in the seventh and final inning, dropping to 2-5 on the young season.

Testa Corp improved their record to 2-5. Each team gets back to work with games this Friday night.
