After Racist Incident, Wayland And Westford To Meet In Person

WAYLAND, MA — Following a recent racial attack on a Wayland basketball player, the town in March will host a joint forum with Westford residents.

Wayland High School basketball player Saniyyah Phillips was subject to racist taunts from a group of Westford Academy boys at a game in late January. The incident prompted Westford Academy to ban students from attending games.

On March 29, the groups One Wayland, Re-Envision Consulting, First Parish Church United of Westford, Wayland's Interfaith Leaders Association and Wayland's Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusions Committee will host a town hall about diversity.

"The event will focus on building cultural diversity, cooperation and a sense of belonging, as well as processing harms caused by recent acts of racism in our schools," the event invite said.

The in-person event will be held at First Parish in Wayland, 225 Boston Post Road, and limited to 50 people. The event will also be livestreamed for anyone who can't get an in-person seat. RSVP by contacting Dovie King at dovieking@gmail.com.
