WAYLAND, MA — A child riding an electric scooter suffered minor injuries after being struck by a motor vehicle near West Plain Street and Main Street, according to the Wayland Police Department.

Wayland police and fire responded to the crash, which involved a child riding an electric scooter that was speed-limited to under 20 mph, police said. The child was wearing a helmet, which helped reduce the severity of the injuries.

Police said the crash highlights ongoing concerns about children riding bicycles, scooters and electric or motorized bikes and scooters in town.

The department urged parents to talk with children about safe riding, including wearing helmets, looking both ways before entering the road, staying aware of surroundings and not riding motorized devices on sidewalks.

Wayland police said they will continue working with the Wayland School Department on safety messaging for students and will increase enforcement efforts. Officers who observe or receive reports of unsafe riding may speak with juveniles involved, notify parents or confiscate devices when necessary, police said.

Police also asked residents to work together to help young people have a safe end of the school year and summer.
