Wayland Gets $100K State Grant For Energy Upgrades, Electric Vehicles

WAYLAND, MA — A new state grant will help Wayland cut municipal energy use and add electric vehicles to its fleet.

Wayland has received $100,475 from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources' Green Communities Division, town officials announced on Tuesday. The money will fund LED lighting upgrades and vehicle purchases tied to Wayland's Climate Action Mobilization Plan.

The grant includes:

• $39,224 for LED lighting at Town Building
• $16,251 for LED lighting at Wayland Free Public Library
• $30,000 toward an electric work van
• $15,000 toward an electric police vehicle

Wayland was among 57 Massachusetts municipalities selected for competitive grants supporting energy efficiency, reduced fossil fuel use and clean energy projects, according to the town.

Ellen Tohn, chair of Wayland's Energy and Climate Committee, said the funding would help the town reduce energy use.

"Wayland is thrilled to receive this funding, which will be instrumental in helping us to reduce our energy use and continue to electrify our town vehicles, consistent with Wayland's Climate Action Mobilization Plan," Tohn said in the announcement.

Wayland has been designated a Massachusetts Green Community since 2010. The town has received $918,956 through the program to date.
