WAYLAND, MA — A longtime Wayland firefighter who aided the response at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks is retiring after more than three decades of service.

Senior Capt. Dan Buentello began his career as a member of the Wayland Call Fire Department before he was appointed a full-time firefighter and EMT on Jan. 11, 1994, according to the Wayland Fire Department. He later rose from private to lieutenant, captain and senior captain.

Buentello served on the Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he was deployed to New York City, where he spent a week assisting with the World Trade Center response and supporting people affected by the tragedy.

An avid diver, Buentello also served as a member of the District 14 Dive Rescue Team.

The department highlighted public education as one of Buentello's greatest passions. He taught children about fire safety through the Student Awareness of Fire Education, or SAFE, Program and presented fire safety programs for older residents through the Wayland Council on Aging.

"More importantly, he has made a lasting impact on the department, his fellow firefighters, and the community he has proudly served for more than three decades," the department said in announcing his retirement.
