Six Wayland-Weston Rowers Recruited To College Teams

WAYLAND, MA — Six recent Wayland-Weston Rowing graduates have continued their athletic careers at colleges across the Northeast.

Ashley Maddocks is rowing at the University of Rochester, Mary Brown at Bucknell University, Anishka Trehan and Jacob Zeng at MIT, Andrew Cui at Dartmouth College and Sehbu Parsekian at Wesleyan University, according to Wayland-Weston Rowing. All six were among the program's 16 student-athletes who graduated last spring.

Three other graduates, Colin Bradley, Michael Lappi and Tony Ohanian, are attending Hamilton College, UCLA and Boston University, respectively. The program said they may have opportunities to join their schools' rowing teams as walk-ons.

Since 2000, 85 Wayland-Weston alumni have rowed or served as coxswains at 45 Division I and Division III colleges, the organization said. Alumni have also represented the United States, Canada, Germany and Puerto Rico on national teams, with some competing in five Olympic Games.

The organization said its college athletes began rowing through middle school or high school novice teams with no prior experience in the sport.

Wayland-Weston Rowing's fall novice program begins Monday, Aug. 31, at Lake Cochituate. The nine-week program is open to Wayland and Weston high school students ages 14 to 18 and runs six days per week through the end of October. It includes five regattas.

The organization will hold an informational webinar at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.
