WAYLAND, MA β€” Developers behind a proposal to build a large affordable housing complex along the Boston Post Road have filed new, larger plans. The Rivers Edge development initially called for 188 units, but has expanded to 218 units, according to plans.

The developer, Lexington-based Wood Partners East Acquisitions, withdrew old plans and resubmitted new ones on Oct. 15. The new proposal is set to go before the Zoning Board of Appeals on Nov. 12.

Rivers Edge is an important project for Wayland because it will help the town reach a 10 percent affordable housing stock mandated under the Massachusetts 40B law. Wayland is supposed to hit the 10 percent mark by 2020 to avoid triggering a 40B clause that allows developers to bypass local zoning for affordable housing projects β€” but town officials say they have some wiggle room to avoid that deadline with Rivers Edge in the pipeline.

The Rivers Edge project was delayed in spring 2018 after asbestos was discovered at the development site, located at 490 Boston Post Road. That contamination has since been cleaned up.

A call seeking comment from Wood Partners East Acquisitions principal Jim Lambert was not immediately returned.
