TD Bank Begins Work on New Boston Post Road Location
The former Finagle a Bagel restaurant was razed this week as TD Bank works toward a late fall opening for its second Wayland location.
On Monday morning, the empty shell of restaurant still stood in its place on Boston Post Road. By Wednesday, every remnant of the restaurant was gone and an adult-size dirt pile – with adult-size machines to push it around – had taken its place.
It all disappeared quickly, but it didn’t go to the dump. TD Bank, which is leasing the land for a new location, is pursuing LEED silver certification for the branch being built there. That means that the materials from the former building will be largely recycled.
Jimmy Hernandez, spokesperson with TD Bank, said the company launched its green prototype design in February 2010. Since then more than 20 branches and offices have been constructed with following the prototype.

“It’s good for the community, it’s good for the environment, it’s good for our employees and it’s good for our customers,” Hernandez said, explaining that achieving LEED certification involves five categories: Reduced water use, use of recycled resources, land use, indoor environmental air quality and vegetation.
Wayland’s other TD Bank location, on was built prior to this new prototype, which Hernandez admitted made both environmental and business sense.

He explained, for instance, that the new TD Bank branch on Boston Post Road will feature what the company calls a “solar drive-through canopy.” Rather than building a traditional awning with beams, metal and paint to cover its drive-through banking lanes, TD Bank is using solar panels to create the awning.
Not only will those panels shield TD Bank customers from the elements, Hernandez said they will generate 20 percent of the energy the location needs to operate.
“It’s cheaper than building a regular drive-through canopy,” Hernandez said. “We reduce costs in terms of the construction, we reduce costs in terms of the energy that we use.”
In addition to generating 20 percent of its own energy, TD Bank purchases enough renewable energy credits to cover the energy needs of its stores, so 80 percent of new Wayland location will be covered by RECs.
The new store will also include energy efficient fixtures such as reduced flow faucets, secure bicycle parking for customers, ample access to ambient lighting and many other environmentally-geared elements.
It generally takes four to six months for TD Bank to build a new store, Hernandez said. He said he expects the new Wayland location to open in late fall.
