VIDEO: Pool Bubble Implosion (Sort Of)

The Wayland Community Pool is open, quite literally, for the summer.

It wasn't destructive or quite as awe-inspiring as watching a building implode, but it was a fascinating feat of engineering that led to the removal of the bubble over the Wayland Community Pool.

About 20 workers spent hours unhooking the bubble, kept inflated during the winter by positive pressure, and then watching as a crane lifted it off the building.

Manager Matt DeChane said he believes the vinyl bubble weighs a couple of tons and can require as many as 30 people to gather and store once it's down.

The pool has been closed this week as the bubble has been scheduled to come off since Tuesday, but rainy skies prevented the removal from going forward. With Thursday's sunny day, the job could be completed and the pool will be open -- bubble down -- on Friday and throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

This will be the second summer for the new Wayland Community Pool, and DeChane said he anticipates it to be a busier summer as people have had a year to realize the new pool is open.

"Going into it, I knew it was going to be tough," DeChane said of getting the word out about the pool. He said he hopes this summer brings "a lot of people using the pool and having fun."
