Wayland Baseball Stuns Third Seeded Burlington

The Warriors lost a three-run lead in the final two innings but bounced back for an extra innings victory on Thursday afternoon.

Burlington stunned upstart Wayland High School with three runs in the final two innings of Thursday's first round North Division 2 baseball postseason game. But in the end, it was the Red Devils who left the diamond with the biggest shock.

No. 14 seed Wayland bounced back after losing a late 4-1 lead, stunning No. 3 seed Burlington on Thursday with a 5-4 victory in eight innings.

The Red Devils scored twice in the sixth and blasted the game-tying run with no one out in the home half of the seventh inning, tying the score at 4-4. Burlington then proceeded to load the bases with one out, but couldn't score the winning run, leaving the door open for the underdogs.

Wayland took advantage of its new life in the eighth inning, as Dan Karp laced a single to right field that was misplayed by a pair of Red Devil outfielders. The ball rolled all the way to the wall, allowing a Warrior runner to score all the way from first base with the eventual game-winning run.

Following the victory, Wayland will take on either Beverly or Belmont on Monday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
