Wayland Boys Lacrosse Falls 9-2 to Concord-Carlisle
Defense was strong, but it couldn't completely control Concord-Carlisle on the road.
Despite fourth quarter goals by senior Kevin Goodfellow and freshman Roby Williams for Wayland High School’s boys' lacrosse team, the Warriors lost 9-2 on Thursday to Concord-Carlisle High School, falling to 10-8 on the season and 6-4 in the Dual County Small League.
“Offensively we were not able to produce quality shots against their goalie [Steven Saul] who is one of the better ones in our [Dual County] league,” said Wayland coach Tom Cavanaugh.
From the start, both Concord-Carlisle (15-1) and Wayland were playing fiercely, with a handful of hard hits causing the referees to throw down yellow penalty flags.

Two Concord-Carlisle players were in fact injured – senior captain attacker Seth Bird is presumed to have broken his collarbone and senior captain defenseman Peter George limped off the field early in the fourth with a shin injury.
The roughness that both teams were playing with in the first, however, was not producing goals early on.

But late in the first the Pat's offense startied to break past Wayland’s defense, and from then on Concord-Carlisle netted nine in a row to blank the Warriors to close out the third quarter.
“We played a solid first quarter,” Cavanaugh said, “and our defense I felt was doing a great job.
"Offense was moving the ball, had great possessions, had a few shots, but the score was only 1-0.
“Then things started to unravel second quarter,” Cavanaugh continued. “C-C basically beat us in the transition game, and against C-C you can’t give up much of a lead and expect to come back.”
Concord-Carlisle junior midfielder Mike O’Brien scored the game’s first goal with just 1:31 left in the first. His shot went past Wayland goalkeeper Lexi Haigney.
Senior attacker Ben Lesser (two goals, one assist) made a straight shot for Concord-Carlisle at 8:00, then senior midfielder Brendan Gay put the team up 3-0 with a close shot in the circle at 6:29 and junior midfielder Kevin Delehey added the Patriots’ fourth goal at 5:12.
Concord-Carlisle continued charging, scoring three more goals in the second quarter past Haigney for a 7-0 run.
The team’s final goal was scored at 4:59 in the third quarter, when Lesser passed from the right wing to Gay, who was standing in front of the net for the goal.
Cavanaugh said he decided to put his second-string team on the field, telling his players, “’The score is 0-0, you have nothing on the line right now except pride; let’s go out there and just play hard and do the best you can.”
With the fourth just starting and Concord-Carlisle’s Bird driven off the field, Wayland began its run, scoring its two goals in the final quarter.
At 10:10, Goodfellow threw a low sweeping shot from the right wing against Saul, finally getting a Wayland attempt through.
Then Wayland’s second score came from Williams with 5:55 remaining. Williams sliced a shot from wide left that went past Saul.
“We did play much better in the fourth,” Cavanaugh said, “but once again, we had some great shots that their goalie made some great saves on.”
Wayland had momentum in the fourth, but the Warriors weren’t able to come back.
Next up, Wayland heads to Springfield to play Cathedral High School on Monday at 4 p.m. for the team’s second to last game of the regular season.
