Wayland Boys' Tennis Grabs Enjoyment In Season's Final Game

With a postseason out of reach and both teams working substitutes, the Warriors dropped a 3-2 loss to undefeated host Weston.

With a postseason out of reach and its regular season ending, Wayland boys' tennis was given a chance to relax on Friday.

Working different players in and focusing on enjoying their last match, the Warriors dropped a 3-2 loss to undefeated host Weston.

“Weston is undefeated and we are not in states so we decided to have some fun today,” said Wayland assistant coach Cole Maholwitz. “We mixed up some matches, had some fun and the score did not really matter.”

Coming off 3-2 victory over Wellesley (14-2) the previous day, the Wildcats sat all but their No. 1 doubles team Matt Gorelik and Matt Legocki and doubles partner Trevor Sands. Weston still managed to grab a victory by winning first and second singles along with second doubles.

“(Gorelik and Legocki) wanted to get sharp for the tournament and play another match before it starts next week,”said Weston coach George Conlin.

“It was good for our players to build confidence, because they are still young,” added Wayland coach Phillip Odipo.

Wildcat Trevor Sands defeated Josh Oneil 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while teammate Ben Spector bested Carter Paul 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Weston doubles partners Harry Teplow and Joe Wagner beat Matt Ayanan and Graham Mellon 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2.

“We were looking to play loose and out because a lot of times we play nervous,” said Maholwitz. “Mixing up the matches allowed them to just hit out.”

Wayland doubles partners Ethan Hecker and Jon Goodman overcame Weston starters Gorelik and Legocki, 6-4, 6-4 at No.1. In the Warriors' other match victory, Jared Trollberg defeated Alex Mogart 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.

“Mainly we won from the errors made on the other side,” said Maholwitz. “The opponents were a little inconsistent, but we were consistent.”

The match finishes the season for both teams with Weston advancing to the postseason. The Wildcats will have to wait till next Wednesday for their playoff seeding.

“We have new freshman talent coming up along with some eighth graders who are top in New England,” said Maholwitz. “We are hopeful for next year.”
