Wayland HS Senior Wins Prestigious Scholastic Art Award

Senior Dora Chen was one of the few students in North America to win a national gold medal in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

WAYLAND, MA — A Wayland High School senior is among a small group of students across the country who earned a top award in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Dora Chen's work "2:10 a.m." won a national gold medal in the competition, which received some 260,000 entries, according to the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, which presents the awards each year.

Out of the 40,000 students in grades 7 to 12 that entered the competition, only about 2,000 won awards.

Chen also recently had her work shown at the 2022 Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists High School Recognitions Exhibit along with four WHS classmates.

Some of the nation's most prominent artists won Scholastic awards in their school years, including Stephen King, Andy Warhol and Joyce Carol Oates, according to the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
