Wayland Orange Falls to Sudbury Red in Summer League Baseball

In spite of some solid hits and help from a few walks, Wayland couldn't top a tough Sudbury Red team.

Minuteman Baseball Summer League play is underway and Wayland Orange is off to a 1-1 start after a 16-3 loss to Sudbury Red Thursday night.

The visiting Sudbury Red team jumped out to a quick lead, putting four runs on the board in the first inning thanks in part to a triple from Jake Goldman as well as stolen bases for Henry Cousins, Mike Pumphret and Steven Colletti.

The Wayland Orange team answered in the bottom of the first, putting a run of its own up in the form of a lead-off single from Nick Barber, who would go on to steal second and score on a single from Ben Verdi.

It proved to be the second inning that would be tough for Wayland to overcome. The Sudbury Red team added five runs to its first inning lead, and Wayland faced pitcher Sudbury’s Sam Robiner in a three-up, three-down inning.

“It was a tough game today,” said Wayland Orange coach John McNamara. “We played really well yesterday to beat a tough Natick team, and we had a really difficult game today.”

McNamara said he and assistant coach Keith Barber know what the team needs to work on – “primarily, fielding” – and will be back on the practice field soon.

Sudbury coach Bob Rosen commended his team’s performance, noting that he has coached baseball for many years and “We have a really, really good summer team [this year].”

“We played really well today,” Rosen said, also praising the Wayland Orange team for playing with solid fundamentals. “We played smart, error-free baseball.”

Wayland Orange falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Sudbury Red team improves to 2-0. Both teams will be in action next on July 6 when Wayland Orange meets Natick Red and Sudbury Red takes on Framingham.
