Wayland Police Recognized for Traffic Safety Efforts

The Wayland Police Department was one of 23 local police departments honored at the annual Massachusetts Law Enforcement Challenge (MLEC) Awards Ceremony along with the Massachusetts State Police for excellence in traffic safety efforts during calendar year 2011 to reduce motor vehicle related fatalities, injuries, and economic losses to the Commonwealth. 

In recognition of their efforts, the Wayland Police Department was awarded a plaque in the silver category and selected equipment from Adamson Industries from the nearly $25,000 in donated prizes by vendors. 

The event was held at the Devens Common Center on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, and was attended by the Secretary of Public Safety and Security Mary Elizabeth Heffernan; Superintendent of the State Police Col. Timothy Alben; the President of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association; and federal, state and community officials.  

The Massachusetts Law Enforcement Challenge is an innovative program designed to stimulate traffic law enforcement activities. It is supported by the Massachusetts and the International Chiefs of Police Associations and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “We are proud to list many members of law enforcement as active partners in highway safety,” said Highway Safety Division Director Sheila Burgess. “Massachusetts can boast one of the lowest traffic fatality rates in the country, thanks to these many fine departments.”

MLEC awards were based on traffic safety activities such as internal policies, officer training, effective patrolling and public information projects during the 2011 calendar year.
