Wayland/Weston Girls' Hockey Rolls to Victory

Team beats Dover-Sherborn, 10-1.

The Wayland/Weston girls' hockey team’s offensive machine had a little trouble starting Wednesday night.

But once it turned on, there was no stopping it as Wayland/Weston netted a decade's worth of unanswered goals, beating Dover-Sherborn 10-1.

“It comes from just moving the puck,” said Wayland/Weston coach Bill MacDonald. “The puck can move a lot faster than they can skate. That’s what we’ve been trying to do: get them involved with the game a little bit more, get some focus, and get those shots on net.

The victory pushes Wayland/Weston's record to 6-1 on the season, a notable turnaround from years of hardship.

“We are learning how to win,” said MacDonald. “The last couple years it’s been a struggle. This year, we’re getting more focused. We’ve had good goaltending. We have some depth that we’ve never had before. We've got freshmen and younger players. We’re really excited. We’re coming together as a team.”

One of those young players is freshman Elizabeth Dennehy, who tied the affair up 1-1 when she scored with a 1:25 remaining in the first period. That started the offensive machine rolling and Jane Haffey gave it another budge ten seconds into the second period. The junior forward sent a bouncing puck from the top left circle to the back of net.

Dennehy, who netted a hat trick on the night giving her a team-leading 10 goals, augmented the Wayland/Weston lead to 3-1 as she scored from 20 feet away at the midway point of the period. Less than a minute later, freshman Jackie McInerney added another tally and Wayland/Weston went on to a more-than-comfortable victory.
