West Nile Virus Found In Wayland Mosquito Sample
Wayland health officials are warning area residents to wear repellent outdoors, especially during peak mosquito times.
WAYLAND, MA — A mosquito sample collected in Wayland last week has tested positive for West Nile Virus, a potentially life-threatening mosquito-borne illness.
The mosquito was collected from southeast Wayland, but officials did not give the exact location. In about 20 percent of cases, West Nile can cause a flu-like illness, but some people can develop life-threatening encephalitis or meningitis.
Even with the positive sample, state health officials have not raised the West Nile threat level for the area.

"Although mosquito populations are currently low due to cooler weather, our messaging has not changed, and we continue to inform the public of measures that individuals can take to protect themselves and their loved ones from mosquito-borne illness," Health Director Julia Junghanns said in a statement Friday. "The risk for mosquito-borne illness can continue into the fall."
Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk hours, but there's always a risk of getting bitten. Health officials recommend wearing pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible, and always wearing repellent that contains DEET or other mosquito blockers.
