$26,000 Fraud, 'Chinese Police' Scam: Wellesley PD Log

A scammer told a woman they were police from China and got her to give them banking information, the Wellesley police log said.

The following are excerpts from the Wellesley Police log:

Feb. 26

2:10 p.m. - Police spoke with a man who said someone used his PayPal account on Feb. 12 to buy a MacBook Pro and make a credit card payment. Police said the MacBook was delivered to an address in Boston and are investigating.

Feb. 27

7:50 a.m. - A school administrator called police and said a teacher was sent a suspicious email the previous night. Police said the email was not threatening, but spoke poorly of the teacher's style of grading.

10:49 a.m. - A woman called the police and said she received a call from package delivery company who told her police in China wanted to talk to her about a package sent from California they refused. Police said the caller transferred the call to a scammer posing as Chinese police. This caller asked the woman for her banking information, which police said she gave. The woman hung up and called the package company, who said there was no package and they never called her.

3:40 p.m. - A woman called police after noticing funds in her business's account were low. Police said she reviewed the account and saw that $26,700 in fraudulent checks were taken from her account. On Feb. 28, the woman called police back and said more money was missing than she originally reported. Police suggested the woman consult with a forensic accountant to check her accounts.

Feb. 28

7:13 p.m. - Police said a man was hit by a car on Washington Street in Wellesley Square. Police said the man was crossing the street outside a crosswalk. The woman who hit him said she didn't see him, as he was wearing dark clothes. Emergency personnel brought the man to a Boston hospital for treatment.

March 1

9:10 p.m. - A woman told police her winter coat was stolen. She said the coat was stolen from her locker at Wellesley High School on Feb. 26. the coat was described as a Canada Goose brand valued at $580.
