Bank Robbery In Wellesley, Suspect Headed Toward Newton: Police

Police say the investigation is causing traffic issues.

WELLESLEY, MA — Wellesley Police are investigating a robbery that happened at the Wellesley Bank near the Newton line today. No details on just how the robbery happened or how much money the man allegedly stole, but police said the man they suspected of robbing the bank ran toward Newton when he left the bank.

At 2:37 p.m. an employee at Wellesley Bank on Washington Street called 911 to report a man had just robbed the bank. The employee described the man as approximately 5’6” wearing a light colored hooded sweatshirt, a mask and gloves.

"We are investigating whether a weapon was used during the commission of the robbery," said Wellesley Police in a statement.

The man left the bank on foot and was last seen running east toward Newton, according to police. Several officers responded and began checking the area for the suspect. St. John’s Elementary School is located nearby and was in the process of their afternoon dismissal.

Wellesley Officers assisted with the dismissal to ensure the students safety. Massachusetts State Police K-9 units responded to check the area but didn't come up with anything, said police.
