Books 4 Change at MassBay

Massachusetts Bay Community College’s Spring Scholars held a successful “BOOKS 4 CHANGE” book drive last month that benefited two local organizations.

Approximately 50 boxes of books, DVDs, audio-books, and computer games were delivered by student volunteers to More Than Words, a nonprofit organization providing job skills training to at-risk youth, in Boston and Waltham. Approximately 17 boxes will be delivered to Barbieri Elementary School in Framingham to enhance their literacy and reading excitement programs.

MassBay’s Spring Scholars program is a special learning community for incoming students who take math, English and a success seminar together and receive additional mentoring.

"This service project gave me a sense of accomplishment,” said Patrick Rahill of Wellesley, one of the MassBay Spring Scholars.  “It was great to see how our efforts produced such a large amount of books and to know that so many kids will be helped.  I will be more open to these kinds of opportunities in the future."

MassBay awards associate degrees and certificates in over 70 academic programs in a wide range of career-driven subjects ranging from accounting and automotive technology to forensic DNA science and early childhood education. The College’s facilities in Wellesley Hills, Framingham and Ashland house day, evening and weekend classes that meet the needs of degree-seeking students and career minded life-long learners. Online options provide convenience and allow faculty to facilitate the learning process. Since its founding in 1961, MassBay has been accredited by several governing bodies and strives to meet the needs of the diverse local communities it serves.  Registration is now underway for summer session, which begins on May 19th, and for fall semester, which gets underway on September 2nd.
