Dice, Bruins Memorabilia Flying off Shelves at The Toy Shop

Andy Brown, owner of The Toy Shop in Wellesley Square, talks to Wellesley Patch about the hot toys this holiday shopping season.

While video games, kindles and iPads continue to sell both in malls and on the internet, there’s at least one packed toy store in town where you won’t find any of those.

Andy Brown, owner of the in Wellesley Square, was helping holiday shoppers in his always-busy store Wednesday, Dec. 14. His shop specializes in the analog version of holiday gifts.

"Video games will always be popular," he said. "For the holidays, someone may get a video game, but they’ll get something else too."

The Toy Shop is lined with board games, dice games, action figures and other forms of old school fun for kids. Here are some of the toys flying off the shelves at his shop:

  • Tenzies – Brown describes this as a dice game in which each team is given a set of 10 dice. They roll the dice and try to get matches, which correspond to a number of points.
  • Spooner Board – This is a wheel-less skateboard that can operate on any surface, Brown explained. In the store, a small TV runs video demonstrating how to use the Spooner board.
  • Boston Bruins Fatheads/Other Memorabilia – Anything with the Stanley Cup Champion Bruins logo on it doesn’t stay on the shelves very long, Brown said. There’s a whole section of the store near a front window with Boston Bruins toys.
  • Legos – Brown said Legos continue to be his store’s No. 1 vendor. Out front, there’s a display of Star Wars Lego sets on sale.
