Middle School Writer's Workshop: Write What You Don't Know

What does it take to write about something unfamiliar? In this writing workshop  author Kim Ablon Whitney will work with students to take short newspaper articles and discuss how to turn them into stories—maybe even novels. We will discuss techniques for finding stories in the everyday world around us, doing research, and then creating a unique and rich backdrop of setting and characters. We will also discuss some of the benefits and challenges of writing about the unfamiliar vs. the familiar.

Kim Ablon Whitney is the author of  three books for young adults.  Her 2009 book, The Other Half of Life has won a number of awards, including the National Jewish Book Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature.  This workshop is made possible by a grant awarded to the library by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), and is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

This event requires pre-registration.  Please call the library at 781.235.1610 x 1107 to register, or register online at www.wellesleyfreelibrary.org
