True North Courses & Events: Eleanor Roosevelt - Leading to the White House, Emerging at Val-Kill

Join North Hill, the evolution of senior living, DePaul University Professor Elizabeth Kelly and communications pro Carol Hillman as they take an in-depth look at the life and ideals of Eleanor Roosevelt and her emergence as an individual.

The niece of one President of the United States and the wife of another, Eleanor Roosevelt’s world was one of wealth and privilege, but not necessarily one of happiness or comfort. Orphaned by the age of nine, she grew into a serious young woman with an acute sense of social justice. Marriage to FDR eventually led to a searing emotional betrayal and also to the forging of an independent identity as an educator and effective political actor.

Her modest home in New York, “Val-Kill,” was a retreat from which she and several women business partners launched a furniture factory, and from which she came into her own.
