Wakelin Room: South African Hope; Photograph Exhibit

Photographer, Julia Weber, is a student at Noble & Greenough School and a resident of Weston.  In these photographs, Julia endeavors to show the hope, positive perseverance, determination, goodness and joy which persists in this township outside Johannesburg.  Kliptown  is a community of 40,0000 people living in poverty, but what comes of this poverty and lack of opportunity is a sense of community.  It comes from an incredible Youth Group called Kliptown Youth Program  (KYP) where children aged 8-18 are encouraged to find ways to get an education and change the cycle of poverty. KYP was the first South African place to receive XO Laptops from the One Laptop Per Child Program, which has the goal of giving a laptop to every child in the developing world. KYP members are now paid as consultants to help deploy laptops all over Sub-Saharan Africa.
