Local Company Creates Portable Pill Dispenser

Local Company e-pill Medication Reminders launches a Kickstarter Campaign for a portable, easy-to-use pill dispenser.

Medication Non-Adherence has been a costly problem for many years, estimated to cost about $100 billion annually. Medications are not being taken correctly or at all - 1/3 of prescriptions are never picked up from the pharmacy! Most of us have a parent or grandparent that has to take many pills and we see how frustrating it can be.

e-pill Medication Reminders, a local company based in Wellesley, has been manufacturing and distributing Medication Reminder Devices since 1999. They have recently developed a portable pill dispenser that can make medication management more affordable and easy.

The device is called the e-pill Accutab, a cassette that caretakers can fill ahead of time. When it is time for patients to take their medication all they have to do is lift up the dispenser and move a handle from left to right. The medication for that dose will then fall into a cup or the patient’s hand. The Accutab dispenses the right meds at the right time. This helps prevent double-dosing and costly errors.

The prototype works great and the company is hoping to fund the project through Kickstarter, the popular crowdfunding website. They hope this product can make the lives of caregivers and patients with complex medication regimens a little easier.
