MassBay Students And Dean To Run Boston Marathon For Scholarships
Money raised will go to MassBay's Boston Marathon General Scholarship fund.

WELLESLEY, MA — Two MassBay Community College students and one Dean in the school will run the Boston Marathon to raise money for the college's Boston Marathon General Scholarship fund. Nursing student Hannah Careway, BioTechnology student Tom Regan, and Dean of Business and Professional Studies Sue Maggioni will run the 124th Boston Marathon.
MassBay was awarded one invitational entry by the Town of Wellesley to run the marathon specifically for the scholarship fund. Dean Maggioni, a Wellesley resident, established this scholarship at MassBay in 2017 when she raised more than $9,000 while running her second Boston Marathon. Her goal for this marathon is to raise $10,000.
Careway and Regan, are each running their first marathon to support the MassBay Student Hunger Assistance Fund’s Meal Scholarship program, and their invitational entries were awarded by the Rotary Club of Wellesley. The Student Hunger Assistance Fund was established in 2017 in response to the increasing awareness of food insecurity among the student population.

The fund helps support the Meal Scholarship Program, which provides meal cards to students in-need access to meals while on-campus. To date, the Student Hunger Assistance Fund has raised $105,000, helping students who are pursuing their degrees with access to food with meal scholarships, on-campus snack bins, the Food for Thought study program, and other initiatives.
Careway of Framingham, is a nursing major who will be graduating in May 2020 and transferring to a four-year university to pursue her bachelor’s degree in nursing. When she is not in her nursing classes or at her clinical rotation at Framingham’s MetroWest Hospital and Whitter Rehab, she works as a bartender at Bourbon’s Kitchen & Cocktails in Framingham. Careway has created a new drink at Bourbon's, the Marathon Margarita, to help with her fundraising efforts. For every drink sold, the restaurant donates $2 to the Meal Scholarship Program.

“I’m excited to run the Boston Marathon, and support my peers by raising money to ensure they have enough to eat while pursuing their educational goals,” said Careway. “I really feel the love and support from the MassBay community and really everyone I tell about why I’m running. I think when you are supporting something so basic, like access to food, people are surprised and want to jump on board to help. I look forward to crossing this marathon off my bucket list and crossing the finish line.”
Regan is a Brighton resident and a Biotechnology major who will be transferring to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology after he graduates in May 2020. Regan works full-time at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton as a mental health worker, where his co-workers have been “so supportive of his goal.” When asked why he liked to run, he explained, “I use running to de-stress, but I also really enjoy setting goals that challenge me. I am honored to be running for my fellow students, representing them on this course, to bring awareness and funds to such an important issue."
This is Dean Maggioni’s fifth marathon and her third Boston Marathon. She explained her determination behind this year’s race. “I’m constantly motivated by our students. What our students do every day, just to get to class to better themselves is a motivation for me to keep going and train on those long runs. Our students are working hard both inside and outside the classroom, juggling the demands of parenthood, jobs, and career searches, all while completing their studies. They are truly my inspiration.”
