New Sounds for Silk Strings

Living gayageum legend Yi Ji-Young, a professor at Seoul National University, will premiere a contemporary gayageum duet with her protegé Doyeon Kim, currently in the contemporary improvisation department at NEC. Professor Yi is known as a master of traditional Korean music, and is currently under consideration for the title of “Intangible Cultural Asset Master” of the gayageum folk genre sanjo. She is also a force in the realm of commissioning new works by Korean and Western composers.

Ms. Kim will perform contemporary pieces for gayageum, first written for Professor Yi by American composer Thomas Osborne and Korean composer Kim Dae-seong. She will also perform a contemporary improvisation with pianist Chase Morrin, and give the world premiere of composer Jared Redmond’s new duo for gayageum and violin, featuring Lydian String Quartet violinist Judith Eissenberg.

Ms. Eissenberg possesses numerous international prizes, including the Naumburg Award for Excellence in Chamber Music. As a founder and director of MusicUnitesUs, she wishes to further the understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures through music.
