President and CEO of Emerson Hospital Christine Schuster Coached Girls at LINX’s GIRL Power Camp

Wellesley, MA - July 15, 2015 – President and CEO of Emerson Hospital Christine Schuster led a discussion with girls attending LINX Camps’ GIRL Power Camp on June 30, 2015 in Wellesley, MA.

“I hoped the girls learned that they should believe in themselves. Find something they love to do and do it! Make a plan, work hard, and you will realize your dreams!” said Schuster.

The group of sixteen 4th – 8th grade girls asked questions pertaining to Schuster’s first job, what she wanted to be when she grew up, and how she campaigned for her job as president. The girls said the CEO was very inspiring, and it was “cool talking with someone with such an important job,” explained LINX GIRL Power Camp leader Megan Mountzoures.

Mountzoures recalled, “The focus of the discussion was about leaders: what makes a good leader and what are the qualities of a leader, all of which tied into the girls’ week-long presidential campaign project. Christine told them how caring for patients meant a lot to her, but she wasn’t going to make a difference just being at one bedside at a time. She didn’t accept things as they were, and always wanted to make things better. Christine asked the girls if they had any goals. The girls said they wanted to get better at sports, dance, and academics. She advised them to write down these goals when they got home.

Mountzoures said Schuster gave great life advice that the girls were interested in. “One specific comment I remember was when she asked the girls, ‘Are you the type of person who walks down the hallways with your eyes down? Or do you walk down with your head up, smiling, winking, saying hey to people?’ She then went on to say how, when thinking about campaigning, the girls should have openness, so that they are approachable, and that many more people are going to smile back at you if you smile at them.” Mountzoures added further that the girls were encouraged to become leaders through their communication with others. Instagram, texting and Snapchat can be used to take a positive stance instead of saying mean things.

After the 30-minute discussion, the girls had fun with teambuilding, campaign posters, a film project, and outdoor sports time.
