The internationally expanding frozen yogurt shop Pinkberry has announced it will open this summer at Linden Square. Meanwhile, during spring, J.P. Licks, the beloved local ice cream chain, opened in Wellesley Square.

The dual frozen treat shop openings represents something deeper than simply two more places to stop in Wellesley. The stores serve as representations of the in which they’re situated.

On one hand, you have J.P. Licks in Wellesley Square: The quaint Jamaica Plain-originated franchise that serves up most people’s favorite ice cream in the area. This store is a reflection of Wellesley Square, the quaint shopping area of town, where there are still a few local, neighborhood merchants who have been hawking their products for decades.

On the other hand, you have Pinkberry, a trendy, emerging frozen yogurt Mecca – whose website even streams a catchy jingle apologizing to ice cream its planned takeover. Pinkberry is fresh, and the franchise itself displays a certain, discernable bravado. Kind of like the new , a plaza complete with brand new signs shrubbery and The Cottage, a trendy restaurant expanding in its own right.

The dual openings represent a community divide. It’s no doubt that , and conversely, Linden Square is hotter than ever, what with its series of weekend events and cleaned up appearance.
