Salon Danilo aims to give diabetes a buzzcut

The hairstylists at Wellesley's Salon Danilo donated their day off this past weekend to raise funds for "Hope is In Style," a national effort to benefit diabetes research and care.

"I have people in my family with diabetes, so I thought: 'If I can get some money to try to get a cure, maybe City of Hope can develop something within their lifetimes,'" salon owner Danilo Nascimento-Kaler said.

"Hope is in Style" is a year-long effort by salons, beauty schools and hair-care-products company Wella to raise money for City of Hope, a Los Angeles-area medical center that provides research and treatment for diabetes and other disorders. So far, the initiative has raised some $850,000 nationwide.

Salon Danilo's stylists got their scissors and blow dryers out this past Sunday to help with the effort.

They offered customers a choice of four services -- haircut, clear glaze, conditioning treatment or Diamax blow dry (a blow dry using a special product called Daimax) -- for $30 each.

That's a steep discount from the salon's regular prices (a cut and blow dry alone normally cost $110), with all proceeds going to "Hope is in Style."

Nascimento-Kaler, who just opened Salon Danilo this summer at 85 Central St. in Wellesley Square, said he's happy to help City of Hope out.

"It makes me feel really good to do something to help other people," he said.
