The Deadline is March 1, 2015. Wellesley high school students, Olivia Gieger and Kyle Wang, are not only part of “The Green Team” but also contestants participating in the “Sustainability Challenge” by creating an accurate, thorough, creative, engaging & fun video which defines the word “sustainability” (as it relates to the environment) to a 5th grade audience to be judged by- you guess it, 5th graders from several of our WPS elementary schools. When asked why, Gieger says the following, “The Green Team takes sustainability seriously because it addresses a serious problem. It is something that needs to be acknowledged and practiced because we only have a limited number of resources, and they are running out. We spread the word and encourage sustainable habits because everyone is in this together- we all share one Earth, and because of that, it everybody’s responsibility to take care of it. We hope that if we promote simple ways to act more sustainably in our community, such as not idling, using refillable water bottles, recycling etc., we will be able to implement small, sustainable habits that will have big impacts. The video contest is a great way to spread the word on sustainability because it will involve high school students and get them thinking about the environment and allow them to come up with ways to act more sustainably while at the same time, it will engage fifth graders and encourage them to consider the environment and give them concrete actions they can do to help it.”
Wasn’t it E.E. Cummings who once said, “good planets are hard to come by”? See the flyer for details!
