Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

Nominated for six Tony Awards, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is "a sunny new play about gloomy people" (New York Times).

In this irresistibly hilarious and ultimately touching play, middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia live together in their Pennsylvania farmhouse, where they bicker about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, the household erupts with endless drama when their gallivanting movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike. As old resentments flare up and personalities clash, Masha’s arrival eventually leads to threats to sell the house. Meanwhile, the sassy maid Cassandra uses voodoo to prophesize the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina somewhat worries the imperious Masha.

The quirky and fully-imagined ensemble of characters remind us of the self-delusions, lust, and love that are grounded in the human condition. It’s no surprise then that critics are praising this contemporary Chekhov spin-off as entertaining just as it is unforgettable.
