Wellesley Beaver Rescued After Clinging To Dam For 4 Days

The beaver was stuck in the same spot in the Cordingly Dam Fish Passage along the Charles River for four days.

WELLESLEY, MA — A beaver in Wellesley is counting himself lucky after being rescued from a damming situation. The animal had been hulled up in one spot for four days at the Cordingly Dam Fish Passage along the Charles River.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston and Wellesley's Animal Control department were quickly flooded with calls from Wellesley residents and pulled off the rescue on Thursday.

The rescue was a risky mission for both the beaver and the rescue team — the beaver was sitting right at the edge of the rushing water and approximately 15 feet below a ridge. ARL officials said a crowd of spectators watched from the footbridge as agents, armed with two nets, were able to corral the beaver into one net while covering him with the other.

The beaver was slowly lowered to the ledge. ARL officials were surprised by the beaver's willingness to receive help, "Beavers typically are not very cooperative in rescue situations, however, once the beaver was on the surface, ARL’s team was able to coax the beaver into a carrier and then transport him to a wildlife rehabilitation center," a statement reads.

Officials said the animal wasn't injured but most likely malnourished since he spent days without moving.
