Junior FIRST Lego League
Grades K-3 (ages 6 -9)
• Teams design and construct a model with moving parts using LEGO elements
and present their research journey on a "Show-Me" poster
• Jr.FLL teams generally consist of 6 students and meet for 6-8 weeks. Each
session should last for about one to two hours, once a week at a mutually
agreeable time.
FIRST Lego League
Grades 4 -8 (ages 9 - 16)
• Teams build LEGO based robots and develop research projects based on a realworld
challenge that changes annually.
• Up to 10 students participate on a team and most teams spend about eight (8)
weeks preparing their project. Many new teams start by meeting twice a week for
one (1) to two (2) hours.
FIRST participants are: (Impact Study by Brandeis University)
• 50% more likely to attend college
• Twice as likely to go on to major in science or engineering
• Three times as likely to major specifically in engineering
Upon entering college, they are
• Ten times as likely to have an internship with a company
• Four times more likely to expect to pursue a career in science and engineering
• Young women are four times more likely to go on to studies in science and
engineering
• Minority members of FIRST teams are more than twice as likely to enter these
