Wellesley High School Key Club Celebrates Service

Members of Wellesley High School's Key Club and their families crowded the Wakelin Room of the Wellesley Free Library May 24 to share stories about and honor each others' service to the community.

About 80 students were officially inducted that night, said Key Club Advisor John Fantini, all of whom have completed at least 30 hours of community service. In all, he said, the students have done more than 3,000 hours of work.

"One person can always make a difference," said Libby Alvin, Key Club Treasurer, who participated in City Year projects in Boston, sweeping, weeding and painting public spaces. 

"We, your community, need you more than ever before," John Bartkow of the Kiwanis Club told the students.

"I want to use this night to say, 'Thank you' to each of you," said Fantini.

"I'm really excited about the Key Club, because they really put their money where their mouth is," said Wellesley High School Principal Andrew Keough. He said the Key Club puts ideals often spoken but seldom acted on into action:  Reach out, do your part. "We say this stuff to our kids a lot, and these guys really make it happen." Keough said.

Also, he said, the community service ethic is contagious - the students are setting an example that's going to rub off on other people.
