WELLESLEY, MA — A Wellesley man trying to buy a house on Cape Cod lost about $74,000 when someone impersonating his lawyer tricked him into wiring the money, according to police. The wiring fraud incident was reported to Wellesley police on June 20. The man told police he received an email on June 17, which he believed to be from his attorney's office.

According to police, the email included instructions on how to wire the nearly $74,000 needed to close on the house. The money was sent to an address in New Jersey, the man told police.

The man followed the instructions, wired the money, and received a confirmation email. But on June 20, police said the man visited his lawyer, but the attorney's office said it never requested he wire the money.
