Wellesley Resident to star in XANADU!

Wellesley resident Cathy Merlo discusses her role in the energetic stage version of the 1980s film XANADU....(yes, THAT Xanadu!)

MOONSTRUCK THEATER COMPANY, in association with Amazing Things Art Center of Framingham, is pleased to present XANADU, opening Friday, July 24, and running for seven performances through Sunday, August 2.

Based on the cult-classic Olivia Newton-John film, XANADU follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Clio, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the first ROLLER DISCO! But, when Clio falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.

XANADU features 9 performers from the Boston and Metro West regions, including Wellesley resident Cathy Merlo who plays Calliope, a jealous muse bent on taking revenge against Clio. “I was attracted to participating in the show because I saw the Broadway production a few years ago and loved it,” says Merlo. “I knew I wanted to play one of the evil muses -- such fun roles!”

XANADU marks Merlo’s Moonstruck Theater Company debut. A career advisor for graduate students at Babson College, has been performing for much of her life and has been a part of over 30 community theater productions. Notable favorite roles include the Wicked Witch (Wizard of Oz), Sister Hubert (Nunsense), Narrator (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Nancy, Oliver!) and, most recently, Stephanie in Nine.

“XANADU is the perfect summer show,” Merlo says, “sugary, fluffy and fun --- just like cotton candy at the fair!”
