📰 News we're reading

• Healey adds $1.9 million to year-round housing grants for seasonal communities (wbur.org) — Wellfleet is receiving nearly $70,000 from the state’s Seasonal Communities Grant Program to study turning a local campground into as many as 250 units of affordable and workforce housing, a potentially major change for year‑round residents. The broader $1.9 million funding round supports similar housing efforts across Cape Cod and the Berkshires, but Wellfleet’s project is among the largest in scope.

• Girls Can Be Left Out of Elementary-Age Sports (provincetownindependent.org) — Families in Wellfleet and neighboring Outer Cape towns are finding that too few kids are signing up for soccer, leaving several third- and fourth-grade girls without a team this fall. Local recreation officials and parents describe how small class sizes, limited co-ed options, and travel and scheduling hurdles are making it harder for girls to play and build confidence through sports.

• 30-year-old man accused of cruelty to animals after capturing great white shark in Massachusetts (fallriverreporter.com) — Wellfleet residents may notice local police credited in a major Cape Cod animal-cruelty case, where a New York man is accused of illegally capturing a tagged great white shark using banned shore-based gear. Prosecutors say the 2025 incident, filmed and shared online, violated strict shark-protection rules, and the defendant now faces multiple charges and a $10,000 bail ahead of a December court date.
