WESTBOROUGH, MA — Ongoing issues with dog waste and off-leash pets near Sandra Pond and surrounding conservation areas could lead to a ban if conditions don’t improve, town officials say.
Concerns were raised by the warden of Sandra Pond during a recent Board of Health meeting, citing frequent instances of uncollected dog waste and dogs roaming off-leash along nearby trails. Areas of particular concern include Bowman Street, Minuteman Park and other conservation entrances, according to a report from Town Manager Kristi Williams to the Select Board on Wednesday.
The issue was also discussed at the Board of Health’s April 21 meeting, where officials emphasized the potential impact on water quality. Sandra Pond serves as a town-owned reservoir, making contamination a key concern.
The reservoir and its surrounding open space encompass several popular recreation areas, including Minuteman Park, the land between the pond and Upton Road, and the Bowman Street conservation area, which offers trail access near where Bowman Street passes under the Massachusetts Turnpike.
For now, the town is taking a measured approach. Williams said the Health Department plans to begin educating residents and issuing warnings about proper pet etiquette, including cleaning up after dogs and adhering to leash rules.
At this time, no ban has been enacted. But if problems persist, the town could move to restrict or prohibit dogs in areas adjacent to the reservoir in an effort to protect water quality and preserve the conservation land.
