WESTBOROUGH, MA — Drivers should prepare for overnight closures and traffic shifts this week at the I-495 and Massachusetts Turnpike interchange.
Three interchange ramps will close overnight between Tuesday and Friday as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation continues construction in Westborough and Hopkinton. An I-495 southbound traffic shift postponed because of weather is also scheduled to begin Tuesday evening.
The I-90 eastbound ramp to I-495 northbound, Exit 106, and the I-495 northbound ramp to I-90 East and West, Exit 58, will close nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Friday.
Drivers on I-90 eastbound will be directed onto I-495 southbound, then to Exit 54A at West Main Street in Hopkinton to reverse direction onto I-495 northbound.
Drivers on I-495 northbound seeking access to I-90 will be directed to Exit 59B at Route 9 westbound, where they can reverse direction onto I-495 southbound and reach the I-90 ramps.
The I-90 westbound ramp to I-495 northbound, Exit 106B, will close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday through Friday. Drivers will use Exit 106A to reach I-495 southbound, then take Exit 54A to reverse direction onto I-495 northbound.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday, MassDOT will also shift I-495 southbound traffic from the median into its final alignment. The work, originally scheduled for Monday, was postponed because of weather and is expected to continue until 5 a.m. Wednesday.
One or more lanes may close temporarily during the shift, but at least one I-495 southbound lane will remain open. The connection from I-495 southbound to the I-90 eastbound and westbound ramps at Exit 58 will also move about 1,000 feet south to its permanent location.
Signs, law enforcement officers and message boards will guide drivers through the work zones. MassDOT advised motorists to expect delays, reduce their speed and use caution.
The work is weather dependent and may also be affected by emergencies.
The I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project includes replacing the interchange, eliminating the former toll plaza and weaving areas, improving ramp spacing and acceleration and deceleration lanes and adding an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9. The project also includes new bridges over I-90, railroad tracks, Flanders Road and Fruit Street.
