Westborough To Inspect Businesses For Drinking Water Risks

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Commercial and industrial water customers may be contacted for access to their properties as part of a townwide drinking water safety effort.

Water Safety Services will begin inspecting all nonresidential properties for cross-connections this week, Westborough DPW announced on Monday. The surveys will identify potential routes for contaminants to enter the public water supply and confirm that proper backflow protection is installed.

Surveyors may need access to water service areas, mechanical rooms, plumbing connections and water-using equipment. Water Safety Services or the town may contact businesses directly to schedule visits.

Businesses should also provide records for existing backflow-prevention devices when available. If inspectors find an unprotected cross-connection or a backflow-prevention device, officials will provide information about any required testing or corrective work.

The town plans to finish the surveys, test newly identified backflow-prevention devices and eliminate or protect unprotected cross-connections by Jan. 1, 2027.
