Bank Remains in Historic Building on West Main Street

This week in "Then and Now," Sam Kurtz compares the before and after of what was once the Westborough Savings Bank.

Happy Fourth of July, Patchers!

Many of you will recognize the above photo as being a view of West Main Street (looking towards the rotary) which includes the current and former Westborough Savings Bank.

The Savings Bank, which was founded in 1869 according to Kris Allen's book, On The Beaten Path, constructed the building in 1928 and remained in the location until 2007 - when it was purchased by Avidia Bank.

During the years between 1869 and 1928, the bank was located in the building (which you can see pictured above with its third story) and in the present building.

Interestingly, Westborough Savings Bank was one of only two banks in the town until the 1960s and was known to have "shared space and personnel" with its competitor while located in the Post Office Block.

You will notice today, if you drive by the bank, that the engraved "Westborough Savings Bank" lettering above the building has been replaced by "Avidia Bank", yet the facade of the building remains one of Westborough's more easily-distinguished landmarks.
