Department of Public Works - Public Works Director

The Town of Westborough is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the full time position of Public Works Director. Westborough is located 12 miles east of Worcester and 29 miles west of Boston, with a land area of 21.62 square miles. The Department of Public Works is responsible for the town’s infrastructure including 34 sewer pump stations, 3 water storage tanks, a water system made up of 10 drinking water wells, approximately 103 miles of water main, and over 96 miles of roadway. The Town is serviced by a regional Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Westborough as well as two water purification facilities all of which are managed by contract operators. The town is home to a culturally diverse community of more than 18,000 residents. The DPW Director performs management, administrative, supervisory and technical work planning, directing, and managing operations of the Department of Public Works, including but not limited to administration, engineering, highway, properties and buildings, water, sewer, parks, cemetery, and vehicle maintenance. The DPW Director responds as a member of the Town’s emergency management team in response to failing infrastructure systems, weather events and other unplanned events; identifies resources to respond to such situations and establish priorities. This position manages four subordinate supervisors who supervise a total of 43 employees in the Engineering Division, Highway Division and Public Works Office. The Director is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. This position also supervises nine contract employees. Applicants shall possess Master’s degree in a relevant field with five years’ experience with demonstrated leadership in all aspects of Public Works operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Qualified candidates will be available during off hours to attend meetings and to make decisions relative to emergency situations or oversee situation through qualified designated operations managers.
