Don't Fall For Utility Scam: Westborough Police

The scammer calls residents and poses as National Grid and demands money to pay an overdue bill.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough police are warning residents about a scam targeting local National Grid customers. The scammer calls residents and poses as National Grid and demands money to pay an overdue bill.

According to police, the scammer calls from an unknown number and is able to tell the resident the balance of the person's National Grid bill and demanded payment or power will be shut off. The scammer asks to be paid through a Money Pak or a purchased credit card with the amount owed on the card. The person then calls back the number and is given directions to read the card number and scratch off the back so the card could be processed.

Police stressed this is not the process National Grid uses to shut off power due to non-payment. If you get a call from a person claiming to be from National Grid, call back the real business on their business line, police said.
