Early Line Common at Household Hazardous Waste Day

The best time to attend Westborough's Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day on Saturday might be a few hours into it.

"You always get a lot of people right when we open, at 7:30 a.m. Typically, there's always a line at 7:30," Sanitarian Steven Baccari says.

"Usually, we're less crowded from 10 to 11. And for some reason, right before we close, we get busy again."

The event runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Department of Public Works building at 133 Oak St. Proof of residency is required.

The event, held yearly in the fall, typically draws 450 to 500 cars that Clean Harbors charges Westborough for, Baccari says.

Clean Harbors doesn't charge Westborough for clean oil, or for propane tanks, he says.

Styrofoam collection is new this year, Baccari says.

Resident Nancy Wright explains that this is the second free Reduce, Reuse, ReFoamIt collection that is part of a project that earned Kaleigh Wright and Bhargavi Ram their Girl Scout Silver Award in the spring.

The girls committed to doing two styrofoam collections each year for five years, Wright says.

Baccari says latex paint will not be accepted Saturday, continuing a practice started in recent years.

"Latex paint is not hazardous. It can go in the regular household trash. It's just that most trash companies don't want full cans going into the compactors, for obvious reasons," Baccari says.
