WESTBOROUGH, MA — Ramp closures will be in effect at the I-495/I-90 interchange one night this week.

Closures at the I-495/I-90 interchange between Westborough and Hopkinton are scheduled for early Wednesday morning, Apr. 1, from 1 to 4 a.m., according to MassDOT. The purpose of the closure is to allow crews to shift traffic on the I-495 to the I-90 westbound ramp.

During the overnight closures, a detour will be in place. Drivers can use Exit 58, as the ramp from I-495 to I-90 westbound will be closed. Traffic will be directed to follow the detour signs onto I-90 eastbound and use Exit 111 (Route 9) to reverse direction back to I-90 westbound, according to MassDOT.

The agency said the appropriate signage, law enforcement details and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.   And drivers traveling through those areas should expect delays, drive slow and use caution.

This comes months after MassDOT announced that a new traffic pattern would be implemented on I-495 northbound between Exits 58 (I-90) and 59 (Route 9) and would remain in place through this Spring.

It's all part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange project, which will help alleviate traffic demands exceeding its capacity.

The project will replace the interchange; eliminate the old tooth booth and weaving areas; improve ramp spacing, acceleration and deceleration lanes; add an auxiliary lane from I-495 Northbound to Route 9; and construct new bridges on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 Northbound over Flanders Road, and on Fruit Street.

The project is expected to be complete by June 2027.

MassDOT said that if crews aren't able to complete the work on Wednesday because of weather or other circumstances, it will continue on Thursday, Apr. 2, from 1 to 4 a.m.
