Good Sports Take the Court for Charity

This week's Athletes of the Week are The Rotary Spokes, a group of volunteers who will shoot hoops in a public game to raise money for charity.

It is hard to top the sportsmanship of one of Westborough’s newest basketball teams. The Rotary Spokes, a group of town volunteers, will be sharing their prowess on the court in April before an expected crowd of 700 - and they are doing it all for charity. For those reasons, Westborough Patch is tipping our hat to The Rotary Spokes as this week’s Athletes of the Week.

“We are really getting excited,” said Jessica Thomas who, along with Rotarian Paul McGrath, has been recruiting players for the Rotary Club of Westborough basketball team since the late fall.

Team members are being recruited to take on the touring Harlem Ambassadors on Saturday, April 9 at the gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m. The fundraising event kicks off the Westborough Spring Festival 2011.

“Now that we have our team coming together, we just can’t wait to get on the floor and start playing. It’s going to be a fun night for families and everyone in town,” McGrath, co-chair of the Westborough Spring Festival 2011, said. “Our team is composed of town teachers, Selectmen and other officials as well as enthusiastic residents who all want to be a part of this,” he said.

Current team members include Sandy Wilichowski, Nancy Wright, Jack Good, Matt Chiott, coach Jack Donovan, John Lentine, Westborough Selectman George Thompson, Gibbson Middle School teacher Nate Jyringi, Craig Nichols, Dave Candela, Steve Wilichowski, Reverend John Taylor, Gerald (Gerry) Levins, Leanne Mason, Jeff Primeau and Mark O’Connell.

All proceeds go to the Rotary Club of Westborough to be used for scholarships and local grants they give out annually. To learn more about Westborough Spring Festival 2011 and the basketball game with the Harlem Ambassadors, visit the Rotary Club of Westborough Website.
