VIDEO: The Westboro Gallery Welcomes New Exhibit
"Seasons of Light" brings together the pastel works of Westborough's Dave Kaphammer and Boylston's Nancy von Hone.
Pastel artists Nancy von Hone and Dave Kaphammer first crossed paths in classes at the Worcester Art Museum in 2004. Their joint show at The Westboro Gallery, Seasons of Light, runs through Aug. 1.
Both artists were on hand at the opening reception on Sunday, May 15. The pastels are priced from $175 to $850.
Seasons of Light presents pastels hung in a salon style. After viewing the packed wall of art, it is possible to distinguish between von Hone and Kaphammer's intermixed pieces.

Kaphammer focuses on winter scenes in which the late daylight brings out blues other and cool colors. Von Hone is enamored with greens and warm colors, and she often focuses on warm weather settings with clouds, sunset and water.
(It also helps that von Hone's pieces are framed in gold, and Kaphammer's are in black.)

Nancy von Hone first learned to paint from her father, Walter von Hone, a well-known artist. Her work has been featured in many juried shows and exhibitions. Von Hone leans towards diagonal forms found in local landscapes and places to which she has travelled, including the Rhine River.
Referring to her pastel Boylston Sunset, von Hone told Westborough Patch, "The sky at Tower Hill was gorgeous. I had a wonderful set of colors to work with. I don't usually change the colors, but I might push them a little bit."
Shrewsbury resident Carolann Tebbetts, also a member of The Westboro Gallery commented on Nancy's work, "There are three things that I like about Nancy's work: 1. Her use of color as a focal point. 2. Her use of unusual formats - long horizontal shapes or rectangles versus squares. 3. The beauty of interesting cloud formations."
When von Hone is not creating art, she's an administrator at UMass Medical School. She studied urban planning at the University of Rhode Island, and earned a Master’s degree from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
Dave Kaphammer drew caricatures of his friends during high school. During college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Kaphammer took on the cartoon strip Mud for the school's paper, Poly. Pursuing his career as an electrical engineer, now at Bose, has taken time away from his art. It has, however, not diminished his passion for capturing light and color. In addition to classes at the Worcester Art Museum, Kaphammer is currently studying pastels with Jeanne Smith in Sudbury.
Kaphammer earned numerous awards, including the 2011 People’s Choice Award from the Art Center at Southborough’s juried art exhibit.
Seasons of Light features Kaphammer’s Winter Glow, which captures a winter scene on a trail near Lake Chauncy. According to Kaphammer, "Sometimes light strikes a commonplace scene just right and makes it seem extraordinarily beautiful, if you are paying attention and are open to it. Those are the moments I try to capture in my landscape painting."
